MINTO – Council here has passed a zoning amendment to permit a limited home industry service and repair shop.

The property, located at 9511 Ayton Rd., was previously zoned agriculture exception (A-51) to permit a home industry and bulk food retail store.

The zoning amendment council approved on Oct. 6 permits a limited home-industry service and repair business within the existing building.

Further details of the proposed use were provided in a Sept. 22 public meeting report, when council considered allowing the repair shop, despite planning staff concerns that the proposed use does not conform with agricultural zoning and applicable planning policies.

Planner Jamie Barnes said she took comments from council, staff and the applicant from the public meeting, and with collaborative efforts, a draft bylaw was created for council’s consideration.

“Hopefully we created a bylaw that clearly outlines the permissions as well as the limitations that we are proposing for this home industry,” she said.

The applicant was present for the passing of the bylaw, and said the drafted bylaw “is reasonable” for what he believes covers what he had asked for.

The bylaw was amended by replacing the existing special provisions and introducing different exceptions.

The lands previously zoned A-51 are to be used for a home industry service and repair shop where only the following provisions apply:

– inspection, servicing, repair and maintenance (including welding) which are essential to the operation;

– automotive vehicle safety inspections and certifications;

– repair or maintenance of small agricultural machinery and/or equipment; and

– related office and administrative functions accessory to the home industry.

The bylaw also outlines the maximum building area is 2,000 square feet; should not exceed two additional employees who are not permanent residents on the property; and should be accessory to the main residential use.
