May is Lions Recycle for Sight Month and the Clifford Lions are working to raise awareness to their program locally.

As spring cleaning gets under way, the Clifford and District Lions are asking people to look through dresser drawers and closets for used eyeglasses and donate them to the Lions Recycle For Sight’ program. Lions secretary Ivan Campbell says the Clifford club has collected and donated over 1,200 pair of used eye glasses for developing countries since June 2013.

The Lions Club collects used prescription eyeglasses and prescription and non-prescription sunglasses as part of a unique recycling program. The collected glasses will be shipped to a regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centre where they will be cleaned, categorized by prescription, and prepared for distribution in developing countries. In some countries, eye care is unaffordable and inaccessible and an eye exam can cost as much as one month’s wages. A single eye doctor may serve a community of hundreds of thousands of people.

To donate used eye glasses and eye glass cases, place them in the Lions Recycle For Sight collection boxes located at the Royal Bank of Canada RBC in Clifford and Harriston, Knox United Church in Clifford, the Town of Minto office, the Palmerston Legion, TG Minto Corporation car plant in Palmerston, Toyota car plant in Stratford, I Vision in Walmart in Waterloo.
