May 8 event recognizes Mental Health Week

The Waterloo Wellington Dufferin branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association will celebrate National Mental Health Week with a special event on May 8 at the Bingeman Park ballroom here at 7pm.

The event will feature keynote speaker Valerie Pringle, one of Canada’s best known media personalities.

Pringle will share her family’s struggle with mental illness and offer four key points to help families navigate the mental health care system and the challenges of supporting a family member during that journey.

A seven-time Gemini Award nominee and member of the Order of Canada, officials say Pringle will be candid and yet add some humour to help inspire others on the same path. As a volunteer, Pringle is a member of the foundation boards for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, the Canada Post Foundation for Mental Health, the Ontario Brain Institute, and the Canadian Broadcast Museum Foundation.

The May 8 event will also be the celebration of the newly amalgamated Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Waterloo Wellington Dufferin Branch. This amalgamation brought together the CMHA Grand River Branch and Trellis Mental Health and Developmental Services to form what is now Canada’s largest branch of CMHA. The newly-formed branch will offer an extensive list of services that will be showcased at the May 8 event, which will have a primary focus on youth services and families supporting youths with mental illness.
