Mapleton volunteer firefighters battle stubborn structure fire

Assistance from Minto and Wellignton North fire departments called in

MAPLETON – The Mapleton Fire Department responded to a fire at a farm and metal business on Sideroad 15, south of Wellington Road 8, at 11:58am on June 8 after a 911 call was placed by a passerby.

Volunteer firefighters from Moorefield and Drayton stations arrived at 12:04pm to find a building used for steel storage and manufacturing completely consumed by flames.

Fire Chief Rick Richardson told the Advertiser on June 12 that tanker trucks transporting water were called in from Minto and Wellington North to meet water demands.

Richardson said wood and oxygen, acetylene and propane tanks made the fire a stubborn one to fight.

Around 30 firefighters were needed to fight the blaze and protect nearby buildings from extension, according to the chief.

At 4:26pm the fire was deemed out.

Richardson did not have a damage estimate available and does not consider the fire suspicious.
