Mapleton lagoon receives silver recognition
MAPLETON – The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) has awarded the Mapleton lagoon with silver recognition for how it improves the Conestogo River’s water quality.
The lagoon achieved a score of 80 per cent for its wastewater treatment performance in 2024.
Wastewater treatment facilities that score between 70 and 79% receive bronze recognition, scores between 80 and 99% receive silver and 100% is the gold standard.
GRCA CAO Samantha Lawson said “I congratulate you on this achievement and encourage you to continue your efforts to reduce pollutant discharges to the Conestogo River.”
Mayor Gregg Davidson lauded the township for the silver recognition of “how excellent we are.”
Public works director Jamie Morgan thanked the Ontario Clean Water Agency that manages the Mapleton lagoon.
“They’re our operating authority so they do a great job out there,” Morgan said.
“And council has been really good too, to provide the money to keep our systems up and running.”
Morgan said he’s hopeful the lagoon will achieve gold recognition for this year, as there was a hiccup in reporting last year.
“I’ve been told 100% they will have that changed for the reporting next year,” he said.
“So we should be at gold standard next year?” Davidson asked.
“We should get gold next year,” Morgan affirmed.
