MAPLETON – Council here has directed staff to prepare a report on alternative voting options for the 2022 municipal election.

At the June 30 meeting, councillor Michael Martin presented notice of a motion for council to consider alternative forms of voting in the next election, set for Oct. 24, 2022.

Mapleton Township currently uses a vote-by-mail system and employs electronic tabulators. Council would need to decide by May 1 in order to change the system for 2022.

Martin was not present at the July 14 meeting, but a motion was moved and seconded calling for the township to explore voting options and direct staff to prepare a report.

Clerk Larry Wheeler stated a report could be ready for the Aug. 10 council meeting.
