Changes in fire and building codes will impact local businesses here.

Though the item was only discussed briefly at Puslinch council on June 19, Mayor Dennis Lever said the legislation will impact local facilities in Puslinch.

Last month, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne announced the government would make automatic sprinklers mandatory in all retirement and nursing homes, as well as residences for the disabled in Ontario. Home operators have five years to comply once the legislation takes effect on Jan. 1, 2014.

The change will also result in the creation of a registry of “vulnerable occupancies” in their jurisdictions and require local fire departments to conduct annual inspections.
