GUELPH – A Guelph man has been arrested in connection with a recent incident in which a man rammed a police cruiser and fled with two young children in his vehicle.
At about 7:45pm on Dec. 5, police were dispatched to an address on Speedvale Avenue East for a report of a suspicious vehicle.
“Officers found a male sleeping in the driver’s seat with two young children strapped into car seats in the back,” police stated in a Dec. 11 press release.
“The man said he had driven a friend to that address and was waiting for her to come back. He provided a name later determined to be fake. While officers were conducting further investigation, the man reversed the car, striking a cruiser and causing minor damage, then fled at a high speed.”
Police later located the vehicle near Victoria Road North and Brant Avenue and the children were safe inside a nearby residence. On Dec. 10 the suspect was located and arrested following a brief foot pursuit.
“A search … revealed a folding knife and small amount of suspected crystal methamphetamine,” police stated.
A 48-year-old Guelph man was charged with dangerous driving, obstructing police, flight from police, carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a controlled substance, two counts of breaching a probation order and four counts of breaching a bail order.
He was held for a bail hearing.
