Man posing as rideshare driver sexually assaults passenger: OPP

FERGUS – Police are looking to identify a man who sexually assaulted a passenger while posing as a rideshare driver.

Wellington County OPP officials say the incident occurred on Jan. 29 at about 1:15am.

“The victim was waiting for their rideshare at an establishment on Woodlawn Road West, Guelph, when the suspect identified himself as their rideshare driver,” police stated in a press release.

“The victim left with the driver and was sexually assaulted.”

Police have described the suspect as an East Indian man, 30 to 40 years old, with short hair with spiked-bangs, some facial hair growth, brown eyes, wearing jeans, and a darker shirt.

The vehicle involved is a black four-door sedan, possibly an older model Honda Civic.

“The vehicle did not have a taximeter (fare meter) and did not appear to have a typical rideshare navigation system,” police stated.

“The suspect reported that he frequented the Guelph and Centre Wellington areas.”

Police are asking for video surveillance footage from the area of Aberdeen Street, Riley Crescent or Milburn Boulevard in Fergus that may have captured images of the suspect or vehicle around the time of the incident.
