MacKenzie concerned about coverage area regarding wireless service
Wellington County councillor Mark MacKenzie remains concerned with exactly how much of Minto will benefit from a broadband initiative being developed in the county.
In a recent report to Minto councillors, MacKenzie said that if and when the project is approved by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs, Wellington County will act as a partner in the venture.
He explained that Everus Communication was selected to be the provider if and when the proposal is approved by the ministry.
The company will install 32 towers throughout Wellington, but MacKenzie does not believe it will be sufficient for everyone in Minto to have access.
“I have concerns with the area they are covering in Minto.
“There are parts of Minto that will not be covered. I’m not happy with that.”
Additionally, he said, the company will not come into an area where there is another tower.
“It doesn’t make sense ... although it might for them,” MacKenzie said.
He would rather see a solution to provide coverage for the entire township.
Earlier this year county council approved a plan to apply for a $1-million grant to provide wireless internet service to rural areas of the county.
