Local youths excel at OFSSA track and field championships

TORONTO  – Three Mapleton youths competed in the Ontario Federation of Secondary School Athletics (OFSSA) track and field championships at York University in Toronto from June 2 to 4. 

Samantha (Sam) Hessels, Cameron DeVries and Joel Rumph all represented Woodland Christian High School in Breslau. All three, graduates of Community Christian School in Drayton, competed in high jump.

Hessels finished 12th in Ontario in senior girls high jump with a jump of 150cm.

Joel Rumph finished fourth in Ontario in novice boys high jump with a jump of 170cm.

DeVries tied for third in Ontario in junior boys high jump jumping 180cm.

In order to qualify to attend OFSSA, students needed to place first or second at the District 8 competition in Cambridge, which was held May 11 and 12, then place in the top five at CWOSSA in Brantford on May 18 and 19) and then place in the top 4 at OFSSA West in Windsor on May 27 and 28. 

Results from each meet were:

 Hessels:

– D8: first, 153cm;

– CWOSSA: second, 153 cm;

– OFSSA: third, 156cm;

– OFSSA: 12th, 150cm.

DeVries:

– D8: second, 173cm;

– CWOSSA: second, 176cm;

OFSSA W: second, 176cm;

– OFSSA: third (tie), 180cm. 

 

Rumph:

– D8: first, 168cm;

CWOSSA: first, 177cm;

– OFSSA W: second, 168cm; 

– OFSSA: 4th place. 170cm.
