Local award winning film makers announce the world premiere of their new web series at the Gorge Cinema April 27 at 7:30p.m.
Savvy Spinster Does the Cinema is a comedy web series about a middle-aged woman who works at a small movie theatre in hopes of meeting “Mr. Right”.
Over the course of nine short episodes – each a spoof of a different film genre from rom-com to horror – she discovers that there are worse endings than remaining single. Sometimes much worse.
The web series came about when the film makers decided to resurrect a character from the short film, Mousey Spinster, which took home an Audience Choice award at a Toronto film festival several years ago.
The Spinster is played by Guelph actor Jen Daniels.
The members of Buttertart Productions – Eliza Crosland, Jen Daniels, Mary Lalonde and Ed Mochrie – hail from Fergus, Guelph and Guelph-Eramosa. They shot the web series over nine days at the Gorge Cinema in Elora.
There were many logistical obstacles to the shoe string production, including shooting around the cinema’s screenings and the fact that costumes, art direction and lighting changed significantly from episode to episode.
Officials say it took the love and support from several local villages and towns to make the web series possible.
Over 30 talented cast and crew volunteered their skills and time.
Area businesses Brodericks For Men, Ron Wilkin Jewellers, Little Tree Nursery, and Guelph Little Theatre generously loaned props and costumes to the production.
But, the web series could not have happened without the donation of the location or the ample technical support from Ed Video Media Arts Centre in Guelph.
The public is invited to join the cast and crew of Buttertart Productions at the world premier.
All nine episodes will be screened and there will be a Q&A with the film makers and actors.
There will also be door prizes and free butter tarts. Tickets are $10 and are available at the Gorge Cinema.
All proceeds from the evening will go to Ed Video, a charitable organization that has helped local film makers and media artists accomplish work of international acclaim for close to 40 years.
The web series is rated 14A.
