Local theatre groups receive awards, recognition

The Association for Community Theatres – Central Ontario (ACT-CO), held their gala awards night on April 5 in Vaughan. Over 600 actors, directors, cast members and crew came to recognize the very best at the prestigious ACT-CO Gala, the Academy Awards for Community Theatre.

Competition was fierce among the 50 production entries. Everyone sat anxiously hoping their showcase masterpiece would possibly garnish them a coveted nomination or even win them the “Thea”.

The local groups all directed by Wellington County residents, did very well in their respective categories. Not only did they bring home the “Gold” but they reaped many nominations as well.

In the comedy category, Wellington County resident Alex Kanarak was nominated for Best Sound Design and Pamela won for Best Director.

Two other Wellington County productions also did very well in the comedy category. Century Church Guild in Hillsburg production of “Remember Me” and Brigida Scholten’s performance as Mary Hanson won the “Thea” for best female in a leading role. Other nominations went to director Martyn Worsnop for best director and best sound to Martyn and Danny Moore.

Erin Community Theatre’s “Steele Magnolias” won the best ensemble award and was also nominated for best production. Other nominations included: Kathryn Delory (Best Director); Angela Gibson (Female Lead); Susanna Lamy (Best Set).

Once again the evening was a success, showing the rest of central Ontario that Community Theatre is alive and well in Wellington County.    Congratulations to all the nominees and winners.
