Local "sextortion": OPP warning residents about sharing intimate photos online
Local police officials are issuing a “sextortion” warning and reminding residents about the risks of sharing “intimate” photos or posting them online.
Wellington County OPP has received “multiple” complaints from local residents who, after sharing racy photos, were victims of extortion.
“The victim begins communicating with someone on a social media platform and is eventually persuaded to send intimate photos to the individual,” police explained in a press release.
“Photos are then used to blackmail the victim into sending cash. Threats are made that if money is not sent the photo will be posted on social media and sent to family and friends.”
Police say both men and women are being targeted, regardless of sexual orientation.
OPP officials are reminding residents “to be extremely vigilant” when meeting people online.
“Once you send photos and videos you lose control of them and they can be used against you,” police say.
Victims being threatened regarding photos or videos shoul block the person from all social media accounts, take screen shots of messages and contact the police, the OPP advises.
“Protect yourself and think before you click … or send a ‘pic,’” police say.
