Local girls shine at soccer tournament

The Fergus-Elora and District Soccer girls under-9 club recently won the B division championship at the Kitchener international soccer tournament.

The 24th annual event drew over 150 teams from across Ontario, Quebec, and the northeastern United States.

The local under-9 girls played in division B, and after round robin play, had a 3-0 won-lost record with two shutouts. The team defeated Kitchener B, Kitchener All-Stars, and Orangeville, with goals by Alicia Higgins (three), Olivia MacMillan  (two), Madeline Ongena, and Laila Wheeler.

The final game against Kitchener B, was an intense, back-and-forth display of opportunities, with both teams having chances to score and both keepers making miraculous saves. With the possibility of overtime, the local team scored on its last possession, winning 1-0. The victory boosted the team’s confidence for the remainder of the season and heading into the coming Youth Cup on Aug. 27 and 28 in Kitchener.
