Lever: new Puslinch council will succeed

A confident Dennis Lever joked that it was “a long 37 days” between his election as Puslinch mayor and his swearing in last week.

“We will succeed” in accomplishing goals and meeting challenges, Lever told a large crowd inside the gymnasium at the township’s new multi-use recreational facility on Dec. 1.

He promised council will be “open and accountable” and said he looks forward to working together with other councillors during the term.

Councillor Susan Fielding, the only returning member of the new council, said the only promise she will make is to “do the best job I can.” She noted locals need to regain some community spirit, and said she always has an open door and looks forward to working with the rest of council.

Councillor Wayne Stokley said he plans to “maintain visibility” and prefers meeting with people face to face. He pledged to closely monitor spending while also making local roads safer. Stokley proposed having “town hall meetings” to invite public input on various matters and also suggested the township needs to hire a recreational director to oversee buildings and develop year round programs.

Councillor Ken Roth thanked those who voted for him and said he hopes those who didn’t change their mind the next time around.

“I look forward to serving you in the future,” Roth said.

Councillor Jerry Schmidt noted the successful candidates made a lot of promises during the election campaign. He said he looks forward to working with council and staff members and is confident the new team can do the job.
