WELLINGTON COUNTY – The eight Royal Canadian Legion branches in Wellington County, along with those across the country, have been directed to lower flags to half mast following the deaths of four Canadian Armed Forces members in Alberta on Oct. 17.

Privates Shaun Farrell, Aidan Goulding and Hayden Lykkemark and Sgt. Morgan Wong, all members of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, were killed during a live ammunition training exercise at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright last weekend.

They were overcome by a grass wildfire fanned by blowing winds, according to the Department of National Defence.

There were also 39 people injured in the blaze, which the army is investigating.
In a statement, Legion Dominion president Sharon McKeown expressed “deep condolences” to the families who lost loved ones.

“We will remember them,” McKeown said.
