Legion recognizes poetry, poster winners

Each year the Royal Canadian Legion offers Youth Education Awards and those who win at the local level can continue to higher levels. Competition categories include poetry, black and white posters and colour posters and more. Three local students went to compete at higher levels and won awards, which were presented at the regular Fergus Legion’s meeting on April 17. The three winners are, from left: Nixiah Penigla, who won fourth place at district primary level for her colour poster and is a student at St Joseph’s Catholic School; Rebekah Harlaar, who won third place at the district senior level for her black and white poster and is a student at Emmanual Christian High School; and Sam Hegedus, who won first place for his poem in the intermediate division of District C and won third place in the same level at provincials. Hegedus is home schooled. Fred Hiller, left, is the chair of the event and Randy Graham is the Fergus Legion president.     Photo by Bill Longshaw
