Jack and Beanstalk pantomime at Century Church Theatre

Century Theatre Guild’s fourth annual pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, opens at Century Church Theatre in Hillsburgh on Nov. 28.

The show is once again sponsored by The Erin Toybox, which keeps the price at $10.

Britain pantomime is synonymous with the Christmas season. Most Brits have fond memories of being taken to the pantomime, and can’t wait to take their own children to that form of entertainment.

The plot centres loosely on a well-known fairy tale, good triumphs over evil, the lovers live happily ever after, and the story-line is supplemented by songs, dances, tricks, jokes, special effects, and some highly improbable comic characters. The audience is actively encouraged to boo when the villain walks on to the stage, cheer for the hero, and shout a warning when “he’s behind you.” Audiences hearing a phrase like, “Oh, no it isn’t” will immediate reply with “Oh, yes it is,” starting a repartee between audience and characters (there are also chases around the audience),

Jack and the Beanstalk plays at Century Church Theatre in Hillsburgh, Nov. 28 to Dec. 7, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 7pm, and Saturdays and Sundays at 2pm.

Tickets are $10 from the Erin Toybox and Hillsburgh library, or $12 by calling the box office with Visa at 519-855-4586.
