It was fun and games – and food and music – at Family Fun Day in Bissell Park

Josiah CaDougan, a Centre Wellington student at St. James high school in Guelph, performed a re-enactment of Richard Pierpoint, reading a letter the former slave wrote to government officials seeking to return to his home country of Bondu, now Senegal.

Anya Upadhyay, in the white shirt with the words “Wear for Change,” designed and sewed clothing for the fashion show, which is a big part of Family Fun Day. The 12-year-old J.D. Hogarth student said she started sewing doll clothes as a kid and has progressed to clothing for young people. She loves watching the Met Gala and all the “amazing” clothes she sees on that stage, she said.

Marvin Colebrook came from Cambridge to show and sell his artwork at Family Fun Day in Bissell Park on Aug. 31. Originally from the Bahamas, Colebrook has been in Canada for five years.

Chantal Gray was selling her book, What’s in Your Hair? The book reflects her experience as a little girl, she said, noting the “bubbles” in her hair reflect her strengths.

Caribbean and Jamaican food was a big draw at Family Fun Day. Here Venessa Barrett of Caribbean Queens, serves up some jerk chicken and other delights.

Jay Douglas and his band were a big draw at Family FunDay at Bissell Park on Aug. 31. He and his band stole the show singing a mix of reggae and soulful Caribean beats.

Nathaniel Barrett took a turn with the egg and spoon race, only they used golf balls instead of eggs. In the background is Preston Baker hoping to overtake Nathaniel in the race.
