FERGUS – Police have charged an Innisfil woman with defrauding a Fergus resident of $150,000 through a “romance scam.”

Wellington County OPP officials say police started the fraud investigation last July.

“It was reported that in June 2021, the victim met the accused online. Through the course of the relationship, the accused asked the victim for money several times,” police stated in a May 23 press release.

“Further, between November 2021 and July 2022, approximately $150,000 was taken from the victim’s bank account without their consent.”

Marina G. Haley, 20, of Innisfil has been charged with fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000.

She is to appear in Guelph court on June 20.
