History of local icon takes the stage

McGinnis Productions is set to present an original play entitled Surgeon Ahead: The Dr. Groves story.

The project is sponsored and hosted by Melville United Church as a fundraiser on behalf of the Groves Foundation hospital initiative. Performances are Sept. 25 to 27 at Melville United Church at 7:30pm.

During his incredible career, which spanned 60 years, the controversial county doctor was accused of many things, including the use of dangerous surgical procedures, performing unnecessary operations at the county Poor House and stealing corpses from the Belsyde Cemetery.

Surgeon Ahead does not shy away from these accusations, but it also showcases Groves’ amazing achievements as a revolutionary pioneer in medical science.

Dr. Groves is brought to life by Neil Dunsmore with Megan Thoms-McDougall as his wife Jennie. Ella Ogilvie and Malcolm Thoms-McDougall play their children Laura and William.

Tickets for Surgeon Ahead: The Dr. Groves Story can be purchased for $20 at Ron Wilkins Jewellers, Undercover Quilts and More, or at mcginnis.productions@yahoo.ca.
