Hike for Hospice event raises $109,785 for Hospice Wellington

GUELPH – Hospice Wellington raised $109,785 through its 22nd annual Hike for Hospice, which this year included more than 500 participants.

The annual event raises funds for Hospice Wellington’s palliative care programs and services for individuals and families dealing with life-limiting illness, caregiving, end-of-life care and grief.

“This event is such a powerful reminder of what happens when a community comes together,” said Phil Gourlay, Hospice Wellington’s event specialist. 

“Every person who walked, donated, volunteered or supported a participant became part of something bigger, a Circle of Care that surrounds individuals and families with compassion, connection and support when they need it most.”

The funds raised will support Hospice Wellington’s community programs and services, residential hospice care, caregiver and grief support, and volunteer programs. 

The organization provides its services at no cost to individuals and families.

The top individual fundraisers were:

– Laura Mann, $3,937;

– Joe Robinson, $3,665; and

– Doreen McRitchie, $3,135;

The top fundraising teams were:

– The Village People, $20,386;

– The Divas, $8,025; and

– Stackers, $4,830.

Penny Van Esterik, representing The Village People, was a guest speaker at the event and spoke about her personal connection to Hospice Wellington.

MP Dominique O’Rourke and MPP Mike Schreiner also attended the event and spoke about Hospice Wellington’s role in the community.

Other activities included a warm-up led by Dr. Kirstie Griffiths and a dog costume contest.

The event’s financial sponsors were Boreal Pet Food, RWDI, Chartwell Retirement Residences and Prime Care Pharmacy.

In-kind support was provided by Zehrs on Imperial Road and Kortright Road, Sunbelt Rentals, Starbucks, Chocolats Favoris, Gillian Foster Photography and Play With Clay.

Hospice Wellington’s Hike for Hospice has been held annually for 22 years.
