High school volleyball referee facing 14 sexual misconduct charges

GUELPH – A high school volleyball referee is facing 14 sexual misconduct charges involving teenaged girls working at recent games in Guelph.

On May 11, Guelph Police Service opened an investigation into complaints regarding a referee at a high school volleyball tournament May 2 to 4 at the University of Guelph.

“A number of female volunteers, ages 13 to 17, who were working during the tournament reported inappropriate sexual conduct towards them,” Guelph Police stated in a press release.

Police say further investigation revealed a similar incident in Guelph on March 29 involving two 17-year-old females working at a volleyball game at their high school.

Hughbee Brown, 63, of Dashwood, was charged with seven counts of sexual assault, two counts of sexual interference and five counts of sexual exploitation.

He is to appear in Guelph court on June 28.

Police say Brown has worked as a youth volleyball referee for over three decades, with considerable time spent in districts 4, 8 and 10.

“Local district school boards have been notified by police,” states the release.
