Harriston Historical Society hosting Headstone and Historical Plaque hunt

HARRISTON – The sixth annual Headstone and Historical Plaque Hunt is underway.

Originally known as the Harriston Superior Monuments Headstone Hunt, the event is now run by the Harriston Historical Society, which has added historical plaques to the list of items to be found.

 The contest is open to everyone and the search is focused only within the Town of Minto. 

“Our contest is the only one of its kind in Canada and past response has been overwhelmingly positive,” society officials state. 

The contest offers both local residents and visitor, a chance to learn a little history of the town while on their hunt. 

The contest opened June 25 and runs until Aug. 9  at 5pm. 

First prize is $250, second prize is $150, third and fourth prize is $100. 

A draw from completed entries will be made on Aug. 12 at  12:30pm at the Old Town Hall during the Harriston Street Party celebration. 

Entry forms are available in Harriston from the Harriston Historical Society at the Harriston Library, Harriston Home Hardware, Beyond the Rock, Leslie Motors, Harry Stone’s, Harriston Bakery and the Minto town office. 

In Palmerston forms can be picked up at the Palmerston Railway Heritage Museum, Norsco Sports and Palmerston Bakery. 

In Clifford forms are available at Gramma Jo’s, Red Express and Kettles.

Completed forms must be submitted by Aug. 9 at 5pm (one entry per person). Forms can be emailed to: info@harristonhistoricalsociety.com or dropped off at the Harriston Historical Society room at the Harriston Library.
