Half of Wellington County elementary schools have improved or maintained their rating on the annual education performance report card released in December by the Fraser Institute.
In data measuring each school’s performance in both 2015-16 and 2016-17, 13 schools improved or maintained their rating, while 13 dropped in the rankings.
The current report card ranks 3,064 public and Catholic schools (and a small number of independent schools) out of 10 based on nine academic indicators from the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) test results.
The two highest ranking elementary schools in Wellington Catholic and Upper Grand District school boards are Eramosa Public School, which was ranked 136th out of 3064, and Aberfoyle Public School, which ranked 191st.
“The Report Card is a valuable tool for parents and educators, who can use it to find schools serving similar students elsewhere in the province that consistently perform better,” said Peter Cowley, director of school performance studies at the Fraser Institute. “By doing so, they can access success demonstrated by other similar schools.”
Scores for elementary schools throughout the county are as follows (not all local schools were ranked due to incomplete information).
Centre Wellington
Elora Public School ranked 912th based on a 2016-17 score of 7 (down from 7.2 in 2015-16).
JD Hogarth Public School in Fergus was ranked at 2,790th with a score of 3.5 last year (down from 5.1).
John Black Public School in Fergus was ranked in 1,642nd place with a score of 6 (down from 6.1).
Ponsonby Public School received a 2,692 ranking based on a score of 3.9 (down from 5).
Salem Public School ranked at 852nd based on last year’s score of 7.1 (up from 6).
Saint Joseph Catholic Elementary School in Fergus received a ranking of 1,962 with a score of 5.5 (up from 4.4).
St. Mary Catholic School in Elora was ranked 265th with a score of 8.1 (up from 7.1).
Victoria Terrace Public School in Fergus ranked 1,642nd with a score of 6 (down from 6.4).
Erin
Brisbane Public School ranked 694th with a score last year of 7.3 (up from 7.2 the previous year).
Erin Public School received a 1,835 ranking with a score of 5.7 (up from 4.4).
Ross R. MacKay Public School in Hillsburgh ranked 1,764th based on a score of 5.8 (up from 0.4).
Saint John Brebeuf Catholic School received a ranking of 2,389 based on last year’s score of 4.7 (down from 5.7).
Grand Valley
Grand Valley and District Public School ranked 2,176th based on a score of 5.1 (down from 6.5 the previous year).
Guelph-Eramosa
Eramosa Public School ranked 136th with a score of 8.5 last year (down from 9 the previous year).
Rockwood Centennial Public School ranked 2,434th with a score of 4.6 (down from 5.3).
Sacred Heart Catholic School in Rockwood ranked 1,206th with a score of 6.6 (no data for 2015-16).
Mapleton
– Alma Public School ranked 2,623 based on a score of 4.1 last year (down from 6.1 the previous year);
– Centre Peel Public School received a 2,962 ranking on a score of 2.3 (down from 3.2);
– Drayton Heights Public School ranked 694 with a score of 7.3 (up from 7.1);
– Maryborough Public School ranked 404 last year with a score of 7.8 (up from 6.8).
Minto
Minto-Clifford Public School ranked 1,341st based on last year’s score of 6.4 (up from 5.8 the previous year).
Palmerston Public School ranked 2,623rd with a score of 4.1 (up from 3.6).
Puslinch
Aberfoyle Public School received a 191 ranking last year with a score of 8.3 (up from 7.8 the previous year).
Wellington North
Arthur Public School ranked 1,962nd based on a score of 5.5 (same as the previous year).
Saint Mary Catholic School in Mount Forest ranked 2,434th with a score of 4.6 (up from 2.2).
Victoria Cross Public School in Mount Forest received a ranking of 1,835th with a 5.7 score (down from 6.4).
