The African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child,” gives the May 25 concert its theme of raising the younger generation, an apt theme for Guelph Youth Singers’ organization of four award-winning choirs, with its 80 young singers, aged six through eighteen.
The show will feature musical selections to represent a variety of styles, including classical, spirituals, African and Argentinian folk, and 60’s pop.
Special highlights will be choreographed selections from three child-centered musicals: Peter Pan, Oliver and Anne of Green Gables.
Guelph Youth Singers has reached national prominence, under the directorship of Linda Beaupré, artistic director and conductor since its inception in 1991. The May 25 performance will be Beaupre’s grand finale concert after 22 years of dedicated leadership and choral excellence.
In June 2013, Markus Howard, who has an outstanding background in choral music, choreography and musical theatre will take Guelph Youth Singers into its third decade.
To honour Beaupré, GYS alumni will perform at the concert and a reception will follow at the River Run Centre.
It Takes A Village will be held at the River Run Centre at 7pm on, May 25. Admission is $25 for adults, $20 for students and seniors. For tickets, phone the River Run box office 519-763-3000 or online riverrun.ca or visit www.guelphyouthsingers.com.
