Guelph theatre staging Edwardian drama
Guelph Little Theatre’s production of An Inspector Calls opens on May 22.
Directed by Robin Bennett and produced by Liz Dennis, J.B. Priestley’s classic thriller is an eerie piece of compelling theatre that focusses on the unravelling of the stage’s upper class Edwardian characters.
Set in 1912 in the industrial town of Brumley, England, the mysterious Inspector Goole (played by Gary Seibert) calls upon the privileged Birling household to question Mr. and Mrs. Birling (Brian Otto and Susan St. John) and their alcoholic son Eric (Tim Campbell) as to their role in the death of Eva Smith. Alà Agatha Christie, even their daughter Sheila (Zoë Barrett-Wood), her fiancé Gerald Cross (Justin Mullen) and their maid Edna (Andrea Shimens, Teresa Viscomi) are not exempt from Inspector Goole’s inquisition.
As Priestley says, “there’s a thin line between respectable citizens and criminals.”
An Inspector Calls explores the themes of jealousy, thievery, class privilege, and social responsibility.
