GUELPH – The Rainbow Chorus of Waterloo Wellington is bringing internationally renowned singer, composer, community song leader and vocal activist Melanie DeMore to Guelph for Connecting Through Song, a participatory workshop exploring the power of singing to build community, connection and joy.

The workshop will take place at Harcourt Commons, 87 Dean Ave in Guelph and is open to all.

Participants do not need to be professional singers or members of a choir.

DeMore has spent decades using music as a vehicle for community-building, empowerment and social connection, officials say.

She facilitates vocal workshops for professional and community-based choirs and has worked with schools, youth organizations and communities internationally.

She is also a founding member of the Grammy-nominated Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir.

Known for her powerful voice and engaging leadership, DeMore draws on African-American folk traditions, spirituals, soulful ballads and original songs. Her workshops invite participants to discover the strength and possibility that emerge when individual voices become a collective one, officials say.

“We are thrilled to welcome Melanie DeMore to Guelph,” said Jane Lewis, a local music educator who is co-presenting this event with Alison MacNeill, artistic director of the Rainbow Chorus of Waterloo Wellington.

The Rainbow Chorus of Waterloo Wellington is a local community choir committed to creating connection and community through singing, as well as a registered charity.

“Melanie’s approach to community singing is powerful and inspiring,” Lewis said.

“I sang in a workshop with her two years ago, and I left with a very full heart and a feeling of hope for humanity.

“I wanted to bring that to Guelph,” Lewis continued.

“She’s extraordinary.”

Workshop registration is available at two rates: $45 for the full-rate participant registration and $25 at the reduced rate.

Registration can be completed at rainbowchorus.ca/events.
