Groups to hold Mayors For Meals campaign

VON Meals on Wheels has announced it will be participating in the International 2010 Mayor’s For Meals campaign.

Mayors For Meals is part of a larger U.S. national campaign, March For Meals, designed to promote Meals on Wheels in March each year.

March For Meals is an annual event in the United States designed to increase public awareness, recruit new volunteers, and to increase by creating and implementing unique local March for Meals activities and fundraising efforts.

This year, Meal on Wheels agencies in Ontario will be participating as well on March 21.

In 2006, organizers introduced a new component of the March For Meals campaign called Mayors For Meals.  On a designated day in March, mayors deliver meals with their local senior nutrition program to seniors in their community.  Mayors For Meals garners media attention locally and nationally and helps raise public awareness.

“We are once again, excited about our Mayors for Meals campaign. We hope to raise awareness of seniors nutrition needs in our community. While senior nutrition programs across Canada share problems common to all, such as growing aging population and limited resources, senior nutrition programs in rural areas face unique challenges such as time, distance, cost, and labour,” said Dee Dee Eurig, program coordinator of VON Meals on Wheels.  In Ontario, the Ontario Community Support Association represents the needs and issues of Meals on Wheels providers like VON, and hold the licensing rights of Meals on Wheels for Canada.
