Greenbelt discussions ongoing says Watters

Wellington County councillor Shawn Watters expects more information coming on updates to the provincial greenbelt.

Speaking to Centre Wellington councillors on June 27, Watters noted the county has closely been following the issue.

“As we know the greenbelt was established about 10 to 15 years ago and is a stretch of literally green belt around the GTA, designed at the time to protect water resources and to halt/contain development within the GTA.”

Watters added “to a degree, it has done that.”

He said the province had promoted additional greenbelt legislation.

“They wanted to see this developed from the ground up, and groups such as Wellington Water Watchers have gravitated to that and started to share the programs in Puslinch and Fergus … talking about the greenbelt.”

Watters admitted to being on the fence on the greenbelt questioning what the legislation would do beyond what the county already does in terms of protecting natural corridors and water quality.

Watters said “a Wellington County greenbelt or made-in-Wellington approach,” are possibilities that could result from discussions.
