ELORA - A group of Centre Wellington District High School students is taking up the fight against cancer.

A dozen Grade 12 students are planning a Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life fundraiser at Bissell Park in Elora on May 25 from 5 to 11pm.

“We did one through our school two years ago and it really brought our school together as a community,” said Lexey Burns, event advertising and communications captain.

However, students were not permitted to do a relay through the school this year.

“We had to take things into our own hands and we’ve basically been running it solo,” she said.

The Centre Wellington Relay for Life has a $35,000 fundraising goal and as of May 21 the event was 58 per cent of the way there, with $20,134 raised.

While the relay now has 20 teams registered, Burns said it wasn’t easy.

“Originally students were interested because they’d get the day off school and they’d be able to participate at the school and it was convenient for them,” she said.

Now that the event is on a Saturday, “it was difficult to find people who were interested.”

Most of the teams who have signed up are students,  but Burns said the event is open to the whole community.

Teams can have up to 10 participants. Those looking to find out more about the Centre Wellington Relay for Life or to register a team can visit https://bit.ly/2WNg76l.

Those interested in volunteering at the event can email cwrelay4life@gmail.com.
