Gianturco brings Grandmother Power on Sept. 17

It may seem early notice, but it’s not every day a woman like Paola Gianturco comes to town to speak and the expectation is the event is one not to be missed.

Gianturco, who has travelled the world photographing and interviewing activist grandmothers, is coming to Centre Wellington to share her experiences. The author and photojournalist will be here Sept. 19 at the Elora Legion to showcase images of the amazing grandmothers from around the world. Gianturco has documented the lives of 120 activist grandmothers in 15 countries on five continents in her book Grandmother Power:  A Global Phenomenon.

These are grandmothers who are fighting against poverty, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and human rights abuse, to fight for a better world for grandchildren everywhere.

Gianturco’s work has been covered on TV and radio programs including CNN and Oprah Winfrey’s television show. Her work has been exhibited by the United Nations-New York and UNESCO-Paris.

All author royalties from Gianturco’s book will be donated to the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s (SLF) Grandmother to Grandmother Campaign, as will all proceeds from An Evening with Paola Event hosted by The Grandmothers of the Grand on Sept. 19 at the Elora Legion.

The Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) launched the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign in 2006 in response to the emerging crisis faced by African grandmothers as they care for AIDS orphans.

Tickets for the event will be $10, available Aug. 1 at Roxanne’s Reflections Bookstore, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, The Elora Centre for the Arts, The Book Shelf, in Guelph and Wordsworth Books in Waterloo.
