NORTH WELLINGTON – Local firefighters are calling on kids to help keep people safe this winter with a contest to keep fire hydrants clear.
From Jan. 2 through to April 1, Wellington North Fire Services is offering “Hydrant Hero” toques as an incentive for kids to clear snow from around local hydrants.
“After snowfall, clear the snow 360° around a fire hydrant (one to two feet of space, plus a clear path if needed),” firefighters state on Facebook.
Kids who shovel five different hydrants will receive a free hat (one per participant for the season, while supplies last).
Kids aged three and up living in Mapleton, Minto and Wellington North are eligible to enter the competition.
Fire officials ask kids under 13 to have a parent or guardian submit their entries.
To enter, email c.loos@mintofiredept.on.ca with before and after photos of each hydrant shoveled, as well as the location (address or nearest intersection) and date and time shoveled.
Each hydrant must be different, and photos must be taken the same day and be clear and show surroundings.
Different hydrants can be completed on different days.
No reused photos.
Fire officials encourage participants to stay safe by wearing bright clothing, keeping off the road, avoiding deep plow banks and not touching hydrant valves.
