Film, opera to celebrate singer Stratus

The Gorge Cinema here will celebrate the 70th birthday of legendary Canadian Soprana Teresa Stratus May 24.

The events will include an afternoon presentations of op­era and documentary films about Stratas at the Gorge Cinema, Mill Street West, and an 8pm evening piano concert performance of the new cham­ber opera Stratas, by Elora composer Peter Skoggard, with libretto by David Macfarlane.

It stars Canadian Soprano Bridget Hogan, and is under the musical direction of Dr. Chris­topher Burton. It takes place at the Elora Centre for the Arts, 75 Melville Street. For tickets and information, call 519 846-9698 or visit www.elora­cen­tre­for­the­arts.ca.

There will also be a Toronto per­formance, the premiere, at Forest Grove United Church, in the Bayview and Shepherd area, the evening preceding: May 23, as well as a June 20 performance in Windsor, as part of the Inspiration Arts Festival.

September will see an Ontario Universities Tour of the work in Ottawa, Guelph, and London. The fully staged orchestral premiere will occur in spring of 2009.
