A section of Highway 6 south of Fergus was made a little cleaner and litter free by 39 energetic grade 6,7 and 8 students from the Maranatha Christian School.

On Sept. 28, the group was assisted by several teachers and principal Richard Hoeksema  for a morning roadside clean-up organized by members of the Fergus Lions Club.

Hoeksema accepted a cheque from Lion Brian Martin for $400 for their hard work. The money will be used for school activities.

Big finds of the day included $2 cash by one student and a very large bleached white lobster claw.

Participants met at the Canadian Tire parking lot anddonned safety vests and rubber gloves. With garbage bags supplied by Carillion Canada Inc. (the contracted company for Ontario Highways), they proceeded to clean up both sides of Highway 6 for a distance of about 4km, as far south as the 4th Line of former Nichol Township.

“The Fergus Lions Club would like to thank Maranatha Christian School and Carrillion Canada for being environmentally conscientious citizens and helping us all contribute to a cleaner and more beautiful highway system,” said Ben Collings, secretary of the Lions Club of Fergus.
