Fergus Horticultural Society garden tour returns June 26

FERGUS – It has been three years but the Fergus Horticultural Society garden tour is back.

Enjoy a self-guided tour through these six amazing gardens, all in Fergus. You are sure to be inspired.

All that is asked is you bring a donation for the local food bank.

The homeowners, along with Fergus Horticultural Society members, will be at each garden to assist with any questions you may have.

The tour is June 26 from 12:30 to 4:30pm.

Here is a run down of the six gardens on the tour.

579 McAlister Street

Here you will find a beautiful shade bed with a woodland trail that features native plants, ferns and other shade loving flora. If you are looking for some hints on how to create a beautiful garden in that shady part of your property, you will find inspiration here.

140 Millburn Boulevard

When the owners purchased this home, the backyard was a one-inch layer of stone. Nothing else. It has been transformed into a paradise that includes creative treatments in every area, a variety of colourful flowers, perennials, shrubs and trees. This garden shows what inspiration can accomplish to create a paradise where you can sit back and enjoy your morning coffee.

There are three properties in the new Storybook Gardens subdivision. Easy to park and easy to tour. These gardens will be an inspiration to anyone starting from scratch.

102 Duncan Court

This is a good example of how you can transplant successfully. Enjoy the more than 65 shrubs and perennials including the Woody Red Bud Ornamental tree that have been transplanted from the owner’s previous home. Creativity abounds here.

10 Howard Crescent

In 2018 this home had no gardens or grass. See what can be accomplished in a few years with beautiful gardens, creative touches and the highlight, a free form pond with a waterfall. There is inspiration everywhere in these gardens.

22 Howard Crescent

This is another property that started with nothing and is now filled with beautiful perennial gardens throughout the property. Creatively designed and beautifully kept.

Terry Fox Garden

Right at the corner of Beatty Line and St. Andrew Street. This garden features over one hundred peonies that have been donated by the Wally Gilbert Collection.

The Canadian Peony Association has selected the Terry Fox Garden to preserve these peonies. There are beautifully designed and manicured flower beds throughout this garden, all created and maintained by the Fergus Horticultural Society.

Bert and Marilyn Peele and Bev Dawson, all long-time members of the horticultural society, are the plant tour committee. They have carefully selected the gardens on this year’s tour.

“We look for stunning gardens that include plants you don’t normally see, unique layouts and creativity that will inspire the imagination,” said Bev Dawson.

“It is a delightful way to spend an afternoon in June.”

“The garden owners love sharing and educating people on their gardens,” added Marilyn Peele. “They provide a wealth of knowledge that can be applied to people’s gardens at home.”

The Fergus and District Horticultural Society looks forward to seeing you on Sunday June 27.
