Federal Government provides funds to restore fish habitat in Grand River watershed
Michael Chong, Member of Parliament for Wellington-Halton Hills, recently announced $25,500 of federal money towards the Grand River Habitat Enhancement Project through the Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program.
The Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program was created to restore, protect and enhance fish habitat. To date, the program has funded a variety of fish habitat restoration projects, including a restoration project in Mill Creek located in Aberfoyle, Puslinch Township.
“Over the last 80 years, the Grand River Conservation Authority has been instrumental in restoring the Grand River watershed and its fish habitat. The federal government too recognizes the importance of restoring and protecting fish habitat,” Chong said.
“That’s why it established the Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program. This program is helping the Grand River Conservation Authority to further protect and restore fish habitat in the Grand River watershed.”
The Grand River Conservation Authority will use the funds to enhance and improve fish habitat just below the Elora Gorge.
As a result of the construction of the Shand Dam in 1942, the geomorphic changes to the river have impacted the over-winter and over-summer habitats of Brown Trout, Pike, Smallmouth Bass and Walleye.
