ERIN – Council voted in favour of alternative municipal law enforcement officers (MLEO) to increase consistency of by-law enforcement.
“Since 2022 the town has employed a full time MLEO allowing for consistent enforcement of the town’s bylaws,” said clerk Nina Lecic at an April 24 meeting.
“However the town does not currently employ alternate MLEOs to provide coverage during time away from work for … vacations or training.”
The 2025 budget includes $4,578 for two part-time alternate bylaw officers.
Councillor Jamie Cheyne voiced his curiosities regarding the hiring process.
“Is there a pool of these people we will pool from or is there a company that we deal with when we had our building inspectors?”
Lecic confirmed that while there was no “pool to choose from” there are two individuals already designated for the town: Rick Potvin and John Mattocks.
“Rick is a recently retired MLEO who’s had a very long career with several municipalities, most recently … as part of Kitchener,” said Lecic. “John also served for many years as a bylaw enforcement officer with both Oakville and Cambridge most recently.”
Council voted in favour of the additional MLEOs.
