EQAO testing shows varied skill levels

Wellington Catholic District School Board Grade 6 females and Upper Grand District School Board Grade 3 females beat out their male counterparts in all sections of last year’s Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) tests.

In results released on Sept. 21 it was revealed that 86 per cent of Wellington Catholic (WCDSB) Grade 6 females reached or exceeded the provincial standard – 86% in writing and 58% in math –  compared to their male counterparts, where 71%, 66% and 50% reached the standard respectively.

Seventy-three per cent of Upper Grand (UGDSB) Grade 3 females reached or exceeded the provincial standard, 77% in writing and 61% in math, compared to their male counterparts where 65%, 64% and 58% reached the standard respectively.

EQAO is a standardized test that evaluates reading writing and math for all primary (Grades 1 to 3) and junior (Grades 4 to 6) students in the province.

Provincial average

Provincially, 72% of Grade 3 students exceeded provincial expectations in reading, 74% in writing and 63% in math.

For Grade 6 students 81% exceeded the standards provincially in reading, 80% in writing and 50% in math.

WCDSB

In the last school year WCDSB Grade 3 students beat 2014-15 scores in reading, with 70% of students reaching the provincial standard compared to 69% last year, and in writing, 75% compared to 72% but fell short in the math department with 68% of students reaching the provincial compared to last year’s 69%.

Female Grade 3 students beat out their male counterparts in every category but math during the past school year.

In reading 76% of female students met or exceeded provincial standards compared to 64% of male students and in writing 81% of females reached expectations compared to 68% of males. The males took the lead in math with 70% reaching provincial standards compared to 67% of the females.

Fewer WCDSB Grade 6 students reached the provincial standard in all categories during the last school year compared to 2014-15.

In reading 79% reached the standard compared to 81% in 2014-15, in writing 76% reached the standard compared to 82% and 54% reached the standard in math compared to 64% last year.

UGDSB

The UGDSB did not hold EQAO testing during the 2014-15 school year so this year’s scores will be compared against the results from the 2013-14 school year.

The percentage of UGDSB Grade 3 students who met provincial standards in reading (69%) beat the 2013-14 average (66%).

However, in writing and math the number of students meeting expectations fell to 71% and 59% respectively from 72% and 60% in 2013-14.

There were more UGDSB students in Grade 6 meeting the provincial standard last year than in 2013-14 in all categories: 83% in reading compared to 79%, 80% in writing compared to 75% and 51% in math compared to 50%.

Grade 6 females beat out their male counterparts in reading (85% met expectations compared to 80%) and writing (88% compared to 72%) but more males met expectations in math (52%) than females (51%).
