Emergency landing

WELLINGTON NORTH –  On Oct. 5 at about 4:20pm,  county OPP officers were called to an airplane crash on a property at 7296 5th Line, east of Arthur.

OPP Constable Mark Cloes reported the OPP and members of the Arthur Fire Department went to the crash at the gliding club on 5th Line. Investigators found a tow plane, a Smith Piper Cub 180H plane was being operated by a 75-year-old Fergus area man.

The plane had taken off towing a glider. Shortly after take off the plane experienced engine trouble and aborted the lift.

The glider was able to land safely, while the tow plane made an emergency landing on the property, causing damage to a mail box and the airplane.

The pilot, John Proudfoot, 75, of RR4 Orangeville, received minor injuries and was transported to Groves Memorial hospital as a precaution.

Cloes said the Transportation Safety Board of Canada has been notified of the crash.
