Elora Festival announces lineup

The Elora Festival has released its lineup for the 2017 concert series.   The festival runs from July 14 to 30.

Opening Night: Proms

On July 14 at 7pm at the Gambrel Barn the famous tradition enjoyed in Royal Albert Hall is brought to Elora, with favourites such as Pomp and Circumstance, Rule Britannia, and much more. Performing is an orchestra, The Elora Singers, and Toronto Mendelssohn Choir conducted by Bramwell Tovey from the Vancouver Symphony.

Susan Aglukark

On July 15 at 7pm in the Gambrel Barn Susan Aglukark, an Inuk from Arviat, Nunavut will perform. The Canadian artist  has won three JUNO awards and received The Order of Canada.

Starlight Series: Joni NehRita

On July 15 at 9:15pm at the Grand River Raceway tent Toronto born Jamaican-Canadian soul/jazz artist, Joni NehRita will perform.

Britten: St. Nicolas Cantata

On July 16 at 4pm at St. John’s Church Benjamin Britten’s cantata, Saint Nicolas, presents legendary incidents in the life of Nicolas, patron saint of children and travelers. The performance will feature Lawrence Wiliford, tenor, a children’s chorus, The Elora Singers and Festival Orchestra.

Museum Dinner

On July 16 at 6pm at the Wellington County Museum Gallery a light dinner will be catered by Fergie’s Fine Foods at 6pm at the Wellington County Museum in the gallery. Only $15 for food to complement the Cameron Crozman concert.

Cameron Crozman

On July 16 at 7pm at the Wellington County Museum gallery Cameron Crozman will perform. The Canadian young cellist already has an international career.

National Youth Choir

On July 19 at  7pm at Knox Presbyterian Church the National Youth Choir will perform.

Every two years, singers between the ages of 18 and 25 are auditioned across the country to form the National Youth Choir.

This is a rare opportunity to see the best young Canadian singers on one stage — with The Elora Singers, organizers state.

JS and CPE Bach: Magnificats

On July 21 at 7pm in Gambrel Barn the Elora Singers will be joined by Trinity College Choir from England for two Magnificats by JS Bach and CPE Bach. Extraordinary music that is considered to be staple of baroque choral repertoire. Pre-concert chat at 6:15.

Gordon Lightfoot

On July 22 at 8pm at Gambrel Barn the legendary singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot will perform.

Bach: Brandenburgs and Cantata #140

On July 23 at 2pm at Knox Presbyterian Church Bach’s orchestral masterpieces, the Brandenburg Concerti #1 and 5, paired with one of his most famous cantatas, Wachet Auf will be performed, featuring The Elora Singers and Festival Orchestra.

Museum Dinner 2

On July 23 at 6pm at the Wellington County Museum Gallery a light dinner at 6pm, prior to the Goldberg Variations concert. Dinner is $15.

Goldberg Variations (for string trio)

On July 23 at 7pm at the Wellington County Museum Bach’s consummate masterpiece, arranged for string trio, will be played by some of Canada’s best string players led by violinist, Marie Bérard.

Pergolesi: Stabat Mater/Purcell: Dido & Aeneas

On July 27 at 7pm at St. John’s Church The Elora Singers and Festival Orchestra will perform Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and Purcell’s classic Dido & Aeneas with countertenor, Daniel Taylor.

Primadonna Choralis

On July 29 at 1pm at St. John’s Church Mary Lou Fallis, soprano, and Peter Tiefenbach will offer an afternoon of comedy as they explore choral music from its historical beginnings.

Jonathan Crow

On July 29 at 3:30pm at St. John’s Church Canadian violinist, Jonathan Crow will perform. He is concert master of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, a founding member of the New Orford String Quartet, and former concertmaster of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal.

With Glowing Hearts

Canadian cultural heritage will be celebrated on July 29 at 7pm at the Gambrel Barn with a spectacular multi-media show created by Hugh Brewster. The show will feature The Elora Singers, Richard Margison (tenor soloist), Martha Henry (narrator), and many more.

Starlight Series: Melissa Lauren

On July 29 at 9:15pm at the Grand River Raceway Tent a tribute to the great songs of Richard Rogers will be performed by critically acclaimed Toronto-based jazz-pop singer, Melissa Lauren.

Folksongs! Canada & Beyond

On July 30 at 2pm at the Gambrel Barn The Elora Singers, with special guest Patricia O’Callaghan, will present a tribute to iconic Canadian and international folk songs, including a focus on Leonard Cohen.

Hymn Tastings

On July 30 at 4pm at St. John’s Church The Elora Singers will perform a selection of hymns, with optional audience participation.
