CWDHS students host Hunger Banquet on March 27

The students of Centre Wellington District High School are running a “Hunger Banquet” charity event on March 27 from 6 to 8pm.

The goal is to raise money, as well as give people more perspective on the world and information about other cultures and international charities.

Featured charities are expected to include the Centre Wellington Food Bank, Free the Children, Liberty in North Korea, and another to be determined.

When the guests arrive, they will be given a character. Their character’s income and country of origin determine their experience for the night.

For example, if someone is a CEO from Canada, they will be given first class treatment – clean fresh ice water, a multi-course meal, etc. If someone is a farmer from a third world nation, they will be given “dirty” water, plain rice, etc.

However, occurrences will be announced – natural disasters, government policy changes, charity intervention – that will move people up and down in class.

“I love the Hunger Banquet because it is such a unique event,” said Kirstin Pulles,  a CWDHS student and part of Amnesty International.

“It gives guests new perspectives on major issues impacting our world that you’ll rarely experience from other events, and it’s fun too! People get to meet new friends from the community, listen to live music, and end the night with a full stomach.” Pulles added, “This year is shaping up to be one of the best yet with a new venue, new events for guests, and more charities being supported than ever before.”

Tickets are $5, with $2 from every ticket sale going to a charity of the guests’ choice, and the remaining proceeds will support the CWDHS Amnesty Club. Families (up to six people) are $20.

“Amnesty International is a global movement of over three million people in more than 150 countries working together to protect and promote human rights. Our vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights instruments,”  Amensty International states on its website.
