FERGUS – Centre Wellington District High School held its Relay for Life event on May 26 and raised $103,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

The relay started at 11 am and was to go to 10pm, with  each team having at least one  member walking or running the track at all times.

But on the sidelines, there were  games and other activities to keep the students interested and motivated.

Jessica Hill, mother of Addison Hill, who died from cancer last summer two days after her 14th birthday, gave opening remarks.

Addison’s supporters call themselves Team Addy and they have raised funds for cancer research at Toronto’s Sick Kids’ Hospital.

Despite all her medical challenges, Addison had the right “Addytude,” her mother said.

To the students, “your words matter. Your actions matter ... The way you approach your day matters,” she said.

Hill said she is turning her sadness into gratitude and is focussing on raising awareness and funds for cancer research.

“You are my ‘why’,” she said.
