The CW Aboriginal Club has been collecting clothes and and specifically baby items for five years. The group has donated to different Northern Ontario First Nations communities each year. This year the group expanded its horizons by co-ordinating collections with the Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church (Fergus), Melville United Church (Fergus), St. John’s Anglican Church (Stewarttown), St. Paul’s Anglican Church (Norval) and St. Stephen’s Anglican Church (Hornby).
CW collected a total of 65 boxes and just under 1,000 pounds of items. This number and weight represented slightly more than half of the totals collected by all parties. This is a tribute to the local community. The “We to Me” program at East Garafraxa Public School under the direction of Ms. Joyce Turek made a considerable donation and they should be highly commended. Group members say they were thrilled by the involvement of the local community. The boxed and labelled items are destined for the Inuit communities of Sanikiluaq on the Belcher Islands (Hudson Bay), Inukjuaq (Quebec side of Hudson Bay) and Tasiujaq (west coast of Ungava Bay in Quebec). An independent trucker drove the boxes to Air Inuit in Montreal on Dec. 18 and they were flown to each community throught the generousity
of Air Inuit on Dec. 19.
The CW Aboriginal Club collection will continue to collect items for a second shipment by transport truck to Sandy Lake First Nation in
northern Ontario in February. The club is waiting for the winter road to allow accessibility. The cutoff date for this collection will be Feb. 3. Donations can be dropped off at the high school or call Jack Frimeth (519-212-3817), if a drop off is not possible.
The club would also like to acknowledge Domino’s Pizza and Blinkhorn Motors (Discount Vehicle Rentals) for supporting the students. Contact efringette@gmail.com or call 519-846-5025 for more information.
