Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) is hosting its fourth free Twilight Tour, focusing on the benefits of cover crops to soil health and farm businesses. The tour will demonstrate environmental improvement projects that can be done on rural properties.

The tour takes place Sept. 24 from 5 to 7pm at Marshall’s RealFarmer’s Market, located just north of 13517 First Line, Nassagaweya, Milton.

Owners Ryan and Marissa Marshall share how cover crops benefit in their market garden and field crops. Attendees will be treated to locally prepared food and will learn about funding available to assist with planting cover crops.

Increased farm size, larger equipment, less demand for pasture and forage crops all take a toll on soil quality. Cover crops rebuild soil health, reduce wind and water erosion, protect surface and ground water quality, reduce pests and increase soil nutrient levels.

“Whether you farm 1,000 acres of grain or operate a small community-supported agriculture operation, healthy soils are the foundation for farming success,” said Mark Eastman, CVC’s stewardship coordinator, agricultural extension. “Cover cropping is a cost-effective way to ensure healthy, nutrient-rich soil.”

Previous Twilight Tours focused on invasive plant management, stream restoration and pollinators of natve plants.

The event will run rain or shine. Please dress for the weather. Registration for this free event is required.  Please register at creditvalleyca.ca/events.

Funding in support of Credit Valley Conservation and this event is being provided by the CVC’s regional and municipal partners.
