GUELPH – Sean Lessard is a Woodland Cree author, researcher, public speaker and associate professor specializing in Indigenous education at the University of Alberta.
He visited the Wellington Catholic District School Board in mid November, meeting with principals at the Catholic Education Centre, working with Indigenous student support worker Sylvia Kablutsiak and speaking with students in schools.
Lessard is from Montral Lake Cree Nation in Northern Saskatchewan and is an award-winning educator and former youth worker, teacher and counsellor who focusses on innovative education programs and Indigenous youth empowerment.
Director of education Mike Glazier said Lessard emphasized the importance of relationships and how strong student-staff relationships play a vital role in students’ success.
“Sean brings a great deal of experience, having worked for the Edmonton Public Schools as the Aboriginal Educational Consultant, and before that … for the Montreal Lake Cree Nation, Saskatchewan, as a youth worker and a ‘stay-in-school’ coordinator for Nutana Collegiate in Saskatchewan,” states Glaziers report to the board of trustees.
