County’s first baby of 2023 born at Groves hospital

FERGUS – Wellington County’s first baby of 2023, Euphemia Emma Ruttan-Rude, was born at Groves Memorial Community Hospital at 3:43am on Jan. 1.

Her parents, Elsie Kenwell and Larry Ruttan-Rude, live in Mount Forest.

On the evening after their daughter’s birth they said they were feeling “tired, but good.”

Kenwell said the baby is doing well.

“She is a pretty easy, quiet, cuddly baby,” said Kenwell. “Definitely a daddy’s girl already.”

“Daddy” Ruttan-Rude said he is doing well too – “no broken fingers, so I’m good,” he chuckled.

The birth went smoothly, with Kenwell labouring at home for nine hours before heading to the hospital.

Once at the hospital “they broke my water and within five hours she was here,” Kenwell said.

Kenwell’s mom, Sharmaine Kenwell, was there for the birth alongside Euphemia’s dad.

The new baby has two brothers: 11-year-old David Gascho and six-year-old Ray Ruttan-Rude.

Her oldest brother David was able to meet Euphemia on New Year’s Day and “was super excited,” Kenwell said.

“She definitely decided when she wanted to come – she was a week late,” said Kenwell.

The New Year’s baby was due on Christmas day.
