County wins gold at 4-H competition

After three preliminary games, a semi-final round, and a nail-biting championship game, the team from Region 4 – representing Wellington County – won the gold at the 2008 Go For The Gold provincial championships held on Nov. 8 at the Royal Winter Fair.

Teammates Joel Aitken, Virginia Pantling, Miriam Bailey, Heather Aitken, and James Bailey, along with coach Marg Aitken, beat Grenville County in the finals.

Teams from Prince Edward, Huron, and Middlesex Counties also represented their regions in games throughout the day. Each team showcased knowledge of various 4-H projects from dairy to horse and financial fitness to cooking as well as current events.

To get to the provincials championships, each team participated at local and regional competitions.

Games were of various types of questions including assigned, multiple choice, who or what am I, snappers (true or false), and pop up questions.

4-H Ontario thanked the volunteers and sponsor of the Go For The Gold. Volunteer co-chairmen Mike Metcalf and Karen Dair dedicate numerous hours to developing the materials needed for the program.

The support of Ontario Mutuals, the sponsor of 4-H Ontario Go For The Gold Program, was greatly appreciated.
