Wellington County council has moved to consider establishing a new committee responsible for identifying the impacts of climate change across the region.
The motion put forward on June 26 by Mapleton Mayor Bruce Whale states the committee will look into reducing green house gas emissions and more effective methods of dealing with situations of extreme weather.
“Municipal liability associated with extreme weather is a growing concern,” Whale told council.
“By establishing a committee we can raise awareness and place a higher priority on ways to become more sustainable and resilient.”
Council is currently waiting on a climate change report that will be released in September.
Councillor Don McKay said establishing a committee before that point would be premature. He said specifics are needed before action can be taken.
